Selborne Golf Estate – Discover and Appreciate Sharks and Crocs

Your family holiday is scheduled. Tick. Accommodation at Selborne Golf Estate? Booked. All that is left is to plan your to-do list and activity itinerary. A holiday at Selborne is largely about relaxation – be that on the beach or the golf course – but it is also about the added experiences and memories that the KZN south coast has to offer. You don’t want to arrive home with regrets saying, ‘I wish we had done that!’

In our most recent blogs, we outlined day trips to the spectacular beaches around Selborne Golf Estate, and the on-site experiences for golfers and non-golfers.

But relaxation is not only measured in suntans and scorecards. Sometimes adventure activities are encouraged, whether you are an adrenaline junkie or not. If you are holidaying at Selborne, we suggest two adventures for families – both involve getting up close and personal with creatures that have traditionally instilled fear in even the most brave-hearted among us

.

Shark Cage Diving

If the movie, JAWS, still gives you the ‘heebie-jeebies,’ how about confronting your fear of sharks by being pushed out of your comfort zone and into a cage? Recognised by SAMSA (South African Marine Safety Association), we can assure you shark cage diving is completely safe – and ideal for the whole family. You will be relieved to know that the cage is actually a visual and tactile deterrent to the sharks.

Ready to take the plunge? Shark Cage Diving at Park Rynie, a mere 10-minute drive from your Selborne Golf Estate accommodation, is for anyone from the age of 8 upwards. No previous diving experience is needed – just a sense of adventure. The only warning is to keep your fingers and toes inside the cage! You are can expect to see 5-20 sharks per dive, and if, for some reason, there are no shark sightings, you are guaranteed your money back. Your shark diving adventure begins on land with an educational talk about sharks and marine life and climaxes deep in the ocean with a close-up encounter that will surpass any IMAX experience.

Crocworld Conservation Centre

If shark cage diving doesn’t satisfy the thrill seeker in you and you would rather find more adventure on land, then head to Crocworld Conservation Centre, just 16km from Selborne Golf estate. It makes for an ideal family day out, whether crocodiles lazing in the sun are your cup of tea or not. Here you will be treated to a complete wildlife experience. Aside from feeding the crocodiles, depending on the season, you may be lucky enough to encounter some hatchlings, giving younger visitors a unique opportunity to hold a baby croc. Make sure you get a photo opportunity with Henry – the 100-year-old Nile crocodile with his harem of 7 wives who produce 300 babies a year!

The adventure doesn’t end there. Crocworld is host to 11 of the 12 dozen deadly venomous snakes in South Africa and there are daily snake handling demonstrations. After lunching at the Le Rendez-Voux Restaurant, you can either wander through the aviary, home to 99 species of birds, or you can go horse riding. Be sure not to miss the Harris the Hawk demonstration, scheduled twice daily.

Your entire family will come away from Crocworld with fond memories and a renewed awareness of conserving our wildlife and environment.

When you get back to your Selborne Golf Estate rental property, you can spend the evening going through the photos and voting on the most exciting activity.
